SHERWOOD FOREST, OBSORNE, AND LAFON ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HAZARD MITIGATION DEMOLITION

ORLEANS PARISH, LOUISIANA

Gaea Consultants worked with three local firms in New Orleans, Louisiana to provide engineering design services, construction inspections, and complete environmental and historical reviews for the demolition of three elementary schools as part of FEMA’s hazard mitigation efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina for the Recovery School District.  Design services required by the Recovery School District included:  Existing Conditions Assessments, Programming and Project Scoping, Project Design, Bidding, Construction Administration, and Project Close-out.  Gaea was primarily responsible for providing the necessary documentation and completion of environmental and historical reviews with Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.  On-site environmental testing included asbestos, lead, mold, mercury, and other hazardous waste inspections.  Because of the confirmed presence of this hazardous waste in the school building, Gaea assisted with writing the specifications for demolition contractors to remove all hazardous waste prior to demolition.  Compliance of these specifications was ensured with on-site supervision, site visits, milestone inspections, and final inspections.
